Where to find trauma therapists

Frequently asked

Do I need to remember the trauma clearly for therapy to work?

No. EMDR and somatic therapies work with fragmented, partial or purely emotional memories. The complete "film" of the event is not required.

Is EMDR scientifically validated?

Yes — recommended by the WHO, the APA and NICE (UK) as a first-line treatment for PTSD. Bisson et al. (2013, Cochrane Review) confirms efficacy equal to trauma-focused CBT.

How long does PTSD treatment take?

PTSD after a single event: 6-12 sessions with EMDR or TF-CBT. Complex PTSD from cumulative or childhood trauma: 1-3 years, combined with other stabilisation approaches.

Will therapy re-traumatise me?

With an appropriately trained therapist the risk is small. The preparation phase, before any trauma processing, builds self-regulation skills. The processing itself is structured — it is not uncontrolled re-living.

Can trauma therapy be done online?

For moderate trauma, yes. For complex PTSD with severe dissociation, being physically present is often preferable — the therapist needs more sensory anchors to stabilise the patient.
